Floating Islands, Lake Titicaca

From Cusco, we took the overnight Andean Explorer train over the Andes Mountains down to Lake Titicaca in the Puno district.  It was an absolutely freezing cold day, but beautiful on the lake

We visited with a family living on one of the floating islands made from compacted reeds

The mobile shop - with groceries on board

Waiting for the school bus boat

This guinea pig is not a pet, this is lunch (cuy)

The islanders apparently do live like this and do dress like this all the time.  The government pays a subsidy towards solar panels to encourage the islanders to stay on the islands and maintain their traditional lifestyle, which is under threat as the young people move to the cities

  1. WOW!!!!! What an awesome experience. Interesting that they do dress that way every day and not just when there are visitors.
